Well, what a year, hey? Back in February, 2020 pre-season testing was in full swing and both the car and myself were looking quick. My first ever championship season was just around the corner and I absolutely couldn’t wait to get started.
Fast forward nine months and things looked a little different. The championship was cancelled and replaced by three double-header race meetings where no points were to be awarded and the only prize for the victor was bragging rights. An odd – but entirely understandable – format and one that I hope we never have to use again.
However, it would be wrong to write this year off. On a personal level, I enjoyed my first ever race wins and multiple podiums, proving that there's pace to challenge for the championships in 2021. And, on a more general note, it has surely been one of the most remarkable seasons of motorsport ever conducted. F1, BTCC, WRC, WEC, British GT – all of which managed to put on a show in the most difficult circumstances, bringing a glorious distraction to the living rooms of many when we all needed it most.
Even club racing championships, such as the MG Trophy, somehow managed to work with all the social distancing, local lockdowns and jumbled calendars to allow us to do the thing we love most – race. Such things may seem trivial to those on the outside, but for those that love and invest in motorsport, the efforts from all of the organisers, circuits, competitors and fans cheering on at home have been herculean and we owe them our deepest gratitude.
From a personal point of view, none of this season would have been possible without Paul Streather Motorsport, Sam, everyone at the MG Trophy, Mum, Dad, everyone who came to support me and last, but certainly not least, Emma. Thank you.
Bring on 2021.
